Holiday apartment in Manilva – beaches, cultural heritage and wine

Manilva has just over eight kilometres of extensive beaches with fine sand that slopes gently into the sea. From the coast, gentle hills rise inland in stages; the landscape combines rural and coastal experiences.

Beach and nature

The Reserva Ecológica Playas de Manilva comprises the beaches of Chullera, Toro and Negro. Since the beginning of 2012, they have been designated an ecological reserve to protect their flora and fauna. The Senda Litoral de Málaga passes through Manilva’s ecologically protected beaches. At Playa del Toro, the plant forms the largest meadow along the entire Costa del Sol.

Culture and history

Los Castillejos de Alcorrín is a walled fortress from the 9th century BC and combines indigenous elements with building techniques closely associated with the Phoenician cultural sphere. In the vicinity of the Castillo de la Duquesa lies a Roman archaeological site with a necropolis, villa, baths and fish-salting factory, dating from the 1st to the 5th century AD.

Chullera has two watchtowers, including an older tower with a cruciform floor plan from the Nasrid period. The Museo Arqueológico Municipal displays exclusively artefacts from the Roman site in the vicinity of the Castillo de la Duquesa and, in the El Castillo de la Duquesa monument, offers a tour through Manilva’s history.

The present-day parish church of Santa Ana was built from 1776 to 1783. El Ingenio Chico is a historic sugar factory. Its aqueduct preserves the connection to the rest of the rammed-earth structure—a connection that recalls medieval construction methods and a Moorish building tradition.

Wine and cuisine

CIVIMA has exhibition rooms dedicated to Manilva’s wine-growing culture and to traditional and modern wine production. La Vendimia takes place in Manilva town centre on the first weekend of September and includes pressing the grapes, from which the first must of the year is obtained and subsequently tasted.

Manilva’s cuisine includes moraga: sardines are traditionally grilled outdoors, usually by the sea, on specially prepared skewers. Wines from Manilva can accompany meals; the Moscatel grape gives them a distinctive flavour.

The municipality of Manilva provided a fold-out brochure with seven routes leading through places of interest. It was available at Manilva Town Hall, the mayor’s office branch in Sabinillas, and the tourism and sports offices.
