Discover Ojén: Holiday Apartments Between Cultural Routes and Sierra Blanca

Ojén combines densely vegetated gorges, striking viewpoints and historic streets with a diverse culture. The long-distance hiking trail PR-A 167 leads through the Camino del Cerezal along a densely vegetated gorge to Ojén. At the last junction of the PR-A 167, both possible routes lead to Ojén.

Hiking and Viewpoints

One impressive viewpoint is Mirador El Corzo. It is located on Cerro del Pechón at an altitude of 881 metres and offers views of Ojén and the coast from Mijas to Fuengirola. Mirador El Macho Montés is the endpoint of the signposted El Juanar–Puerto Marbella hiking trail in the ZEC Sierra Blanca. It is also known by the names Mirador de Puerto Rico and Mirador de Marbella.

East of the town centre lies Mirador del Chifle, offering views across the Río Real valley. The various routes and viewpoints can be considered different focal points for a day in and around Ojén.

Nature

Sierra Blanca lies between the municipal areas of Istán, Ojén and Marbella. As a Site of Community Importance (SCI) ES6170011, Sierra Blanca is part of the Natura 2000 network. This natural area is home, among other species, to Iberian ibex, roe deer and common genets.

The Llanos de Purla recreation area has a paved car park, fifteen tables, toilets and picnic facilities with barbecues.

Culture and History

The historic streets of Ojén reflect the town's Islamic origins and include stepped alleyways. At Plaza de Andalucía, on the corner with Paseo de Ojén, stands a church built in 1505. It has a rectangular floor plan, a single-nave interior and a Mudéjar roof structure with interlaced bandwork. The church is believed to have been founded as an Arab mosque during the early medieval origins of the settlement of Ojén.

The Stations of the Cross in Ojén are a permanent and permanently accessible cultural route. Along the ascent to El Calvario, there are fourteen polychrome tiled altarpieces depicting and recounting the Passion of Christ.

The lower caves of Ojén have been restored for cultural use; the upper caves offer views of Ojén's townscape and the Mediterranean. The Eras del Calvario form part of Ojén's ethnographic heritage. They were built before the 16th century and are protected because of their historical and cultural significance.

Ojén also has the designation “third-degree archaeological site”; there is no legally binding heritage protection status.

Museums and Festivals

The Museo del Aguardiente de Ojén presents the history and legend of the liqueur through information panels, labels, posters and old vessels. The Museo del Molino de Aceite was recently restored and shows how olive oil used to be produced.

The Ojeando Festival is a two-day music event held on the second weekend of July, featuring more than twenty performances. The Castillo del Cante Flamenco Festival in Ojén reached its 51st edition in 2026.
