Culture and History
In Cártama, the Colección Museográfica de Cártama comprises 183 items and presents the history of the town from prehistoric times to the Early Modern period. Admission to the Colección Museográfica de Cártama is free. It has the largest collection of Iberian archaeology in the province of Málaga.
The Ermita de Ntra. Sra. de los Remedios was built in the 16th century, at the latest in connection with the epidemic of 1579, and features an 18th-century Baroque camarín with richly decorated stucco work.
The Castillo Árabe de Cártama, a castle, is located in the surrounding area of Cártama. Also in the vicinity of Cártama are the Mirador Antena Benalmadena viewpoint, the Enoteca Museo del Vino Mijas museum, the Castillo de Álora castle and the Museo De Arte Precolombino Felipe Orlando museum.
Festivals and Music
Held regularly for more than 20 years, the Jornada del Pedal takes cyclists through the streets of Estación de Cártama on a cycling route; it takes place around the Sunday closest to 19 March.
The Fiestas en Honor de la Virgen de Ntra. de los Remedios received the distinction of a Festival of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia in 2002.
The Noches de la Bella Jarifa takes place annually at the end of September in Cártama and recreates a medieval setting. In the streets of Cártama Pueblo, the medieval programme includes an Arab souk, falconry, oriental music and dances, guided tours of archaeological sites, theatre and competitions.
The Festival Flamenco José Hurtado “Ramoliche” is dedicated to the singer José Hurtado “Ramoliche”, who was from Cártama, and gives particular importance to local artists and contemporary flamenco.
On 23 April, a solemn procession of the patron saint Nuestra Señora de los Remedios takes place through the streets of Cártama. On the first Sunday in May, Verdiales groups meet at the Ermita de las Tres Cruces.
Hiking and Cycling
The Camino de las Tres Cruces is a 14-kilometre linear hiking trail that begins in the town of Cártama. Torrealquería is an 8.8-kilometre circular hiking route that loops around the valley formed by the Sierra de los Espartales and the Sierra Llana.
The Espartales Trail is an approximately 9-kilometre circular route of particular botanical and scenic interest. The BTT route De Cártama a Almogía is 30.69 kilometres long, difficult and not circular.
The variety of route lengths, as well as the distinction between circular and linear routes, provides a clear basis for organising your own excursion ideas.
