The Cañón de las Buitreras natural monument extends across the municipalities of Cortes de la Frontera, Benarrabá and Benalauría; its rock walls are more than 100 metres deep. In the centre of Benarrabá, the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación occupies a central position, while the irregular, steep and narrow streets reflect Muslim urban planning.

Culture and Townscape

The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación is a Baroque-classical church dating from the 18th century and was reconstructed in the 19th century. Also dating from the 18th century is the Ermita del Santo Cristo de la Vera Cruz, a monument of lesser significance in Benarrabá. Every year, the Feria patronal de San Miguel takes place as a four-day patronal festival in honour of the Archangel Michael; the festivities include cultural activities and evening open-air celebrations.

Hiking Trails and Day Planning

The SL-A 215 Llanos del Rey circular hiking trail is an approximately 7.9-kilometre route on foot with an estimated walking time of three hours. It leads through La Loma, northeast of Benarrabá. La Loma is separated from the town by the Arroyo del Infiernillo; hikers must pass through the town on both the outward and return journeys. The SL-A 175 Concoste La Portá hiking trail continues towards the Área Recreativa de La Mohea. The information on trail length, walking time and route helps you assess the two hiking trails for your day planning.

For day planning, you can consider the two hiking trails as separate options. Depending on your preferred daily rhythm, it remains open which trail you want to focus on first and how you combine your hiking day with other priorities.

Nature and Destinations in the Surrounding Area

Castillo del Águila is located in the immediate vicinity of Benarrabá. The surrounding area also includes the ancient site Necropolis Prehistorica de Corominas, the Fuente de Carlos III monument, Sierra Blanquilla mountain, Sierra de los Pinos mountain and the Alto del Conio summit. Further afield in the region are the Mirador Ubrique Alto viewpoint and Castillo de Montemayor.

You can also weigh the destinations in the surrounding area separately for your personal planning. A thematic structure leaves room for different priorities without prescribing a fixed order. You can consider the townscape, nature and hiking individually or combine them in your own day plan. The order you choose is entirely up to your planning.
