Pozo Alcón between Mountains, Water and Culture
Pozo Alcón: The Embalse de la Bolera reservoir lies within the municipality of Pozo Alcón at the foot of the Sierra del Pozo and is surrounded by mountains and forest. For planning your trip, nature, activities, local history and regional cuisine can be considered as distinct areas of focus here.
Nature
At 2,028 metres, Pico Cabañas is the highest peak in the Sierra del Pozo and offers extensive views from its summit. The Pinos Milenarios include at least seven trees up to 1,041 years old; they are among the oldest trees in Europe. In the corridor of the Arroyo Guazalamanco, there are small waterfalls, pools and tranquil water spots, while a diverse range of birdlife can be seen along the banks. The Bosque Encantado de Higueras offers a circular route along the Guadalentín with wooden walkways, springs, small bathing pools and cascades.
Activities
The Embalse de la Bolera is associated with water-based sports such as kayaking, canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding and pedal boating. The route to the Cascada de Guazalamanco follows the Arroyo de Guazalamanco for approximately 1 km and takes about 30 minutes with children. Canyoning enthusiasts use the Cerrada de la Alcantarilla as a canyon descent; in Andalusia, it is considered the third most significant canyon descent. The Coto Intensivo de Pesca de Peralta extends for approximately 8 km and is considered the longest fishing area of its kind in Andalusia. This provides clearly distinct themes for your planning: trails, water activities, canyoning and fishing.
Culture and History
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación was built in the mid-1960s over an older temple whose origins date back to the 17th century. Its tower has a square ground plan and is decorated with geometric designs. The urban route through Fontanar passes traditional cave houses, springs, kitchen gardens and typical threshing floors. In 1901, a large mechanical clock was installed in a small turret in Pozo Alcón; its chimes can be heard in the fields near the town. The Fuente Taza is considered Pozo Alcón’s most important spring and was a historic meeting place for residents for many years. A living nativity play, the Belén Viviente, is performed every year in the natural surroundings of the Rambla del Fontanar. Here, history can be encountered in buildings, technical details, local routes and traditional events.
Local Cuisine
Hachapecho, also known as Farinera, is a traditional dish from Pozo Alcón made with olive oil, salt and strips of cod. For the Romería de San Gregorio, the residents of Pozo Alcón traditionally prepare Migas with torreznos, chorizo, olives and fruit. Those who complement the landscape and local history with culinary impressions will find both a dish with clearly named ingredients and a traditional preparation served as part of a festival.
