Tíscar among Rock Art, Cave and Mountain Views

Tíscar is an outstanding place in the historic corridor between Quesada and Tíscar, where human presence has been documented since prehistoric times. Along this route, the corridor features preserved rock paintings and medieval fortifications.

Nature

The Cueva del Agua de Tíscar is a natural monument of mixed type, designated in 2019 by Decreto 456/2019 of 23 April. As a limestone cave, it was eroded into a deep gorge by the Tíscar River. Cliffs up to 20 metres high, cascades and springs are part of it; these converge at the Pilón Azul near the hamlet of Belerda.

From the A-6206, a paved access road leads to the cave about 300 metres from the Santuario; stairs and a low tunnel continue from there. The Puerto de Tíscar is the highest point of the winding A-6206 mountain road, which connects Quesada with Pozo Alcón and Hinojares.

The Puerto de Tíscar offers expansive views over the landscape and mountains, including the peaks of Rayal and Caballo. The pass also provides opportunities to observe Iberian ibex and birds of prey in flight. The medieval Atalaya del Infante Don Enrique can be reached from the designated parking areas at the Puerto de Tíscar after a short walk and serves as a viewpoint.

Culture and History

Early traces include the Abrigos del Arroyo de Tiscar, a cultural heritage site with rock art and links to the Bronze Age and Copper Age. The Castillo de Tíscar is a fortress dating from the Arab period, with the earliest references dating back to 876, and was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural in 1949. The Torre del Homenaje and the Patio de armas have been preserved at the Castillo; access is via two narrow paths.

The present building of the Santuario de la Virgen de Tíscar dates from the mid-20th century and preserves older architectural elements, including a pointed-arch portal and Granada tilework from the 14th century. For many believers, the Santuario is a pilgrimage site. Access to Tíscar leads through a tunnel beneath a building to a small square with several fountains.

At the Santuario de Tíscar, an atrium leads into the church; there is also a sacristy and small terracotta figures of the Virgin and the Evangelists. Celebrations in honour of the Virgen de Tíscar include the summer festivities from 23 to 29 August and a Romería on the first Saturday in May. During this event, the statue of the Virgin is taken to Quesada after having returned to the Santuario de Tíscar during the summer celebrations.

The cycling route Ruta en bici Santuario de Tíscar – Collado Zamora starts at the Santuario de Tíscar. The Ruta de senderismo La Presilla is signposted with directional arrows. Stage 12 of the GR-247 reaches Tíscar at kilometre 15.6 and then continues to Belerda.
