Culture and History

The Torre del Algarrobo is a fortified watchtower built in the 13th century and has been protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest in the Monument category since 1985. On the same site as the Torre del Algarrobo is an archaeological site dating from the Iberian period, with a rectangular area of approximately 400 square metres. The Torrevieja, also known as Torrevieja de Cazalla or La Torre, has been recognised and protected as an Asset of Cultural Interest since 1985. It formed part of the defensive structure of the Order of Calatrava.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Fuensanta dates back to the 16th century and features a restrained Renaissance style. The current design of the Fuente de La Negra was selected by a vote of local residents from several proposed models. The Lavadero dates back to the 17th century; its strongly social function continued almost into the present day.

The patron saint festivities, popularly known as the Feria del Higo, take place from 23 to 26 September during the fig season. The Passion performances in Fuensanta were revived in 1975 after having fallen into obscurity. On Maundy Thursday, Passion performances at El Calvario depict the Passion and death of Jesus Christ.

Landscape and Nature

The Arroyo de la Humbría forms a small gorge beside Fuensanta de Martos; a path along the watercourse begins directly in the town centre. The Río Víboras runs through Fuensanta de Martos, and the area's diverse habitats support the presence of amphibians and reptiles. Fuensanta de Martos also features a mosaic-like landscape of pastureland, scrubland with hawthorns and wild roses, and cherry orchards, which support a diverse bird population.

The Fuensanta Interpretation Centre is dedicated to the biology of the olive tree, olive varieties, the by-products of olive cultivation and their uses.

Hiking

The “Torres y Picos de Fuensanta” hiking route begins and ends in the town centre of Fuensanta at Plaza del Ayuntamiento. It leads to Cerro del Algarrobo with the old Torre del Algarrobo and then on to the Torrevieja. A circular hike leads to one of Fuensanta's highest points, the Despeñadero, and visits various caves and sinkholes. Another hiking route begins in Fuensanta and follows the Umbría River to its source.
