Beas de Segura – Monastery, Nature and Fiestas

The San José del Salvador Monastery was established in 1575 as Saint Teresa’s tenth foundation and her first foundation in an Andalusian province.

Culture and History

Beas de Segura is part of the Huellas de Teresa de Jesús cultural and heritage network. The Beas de Segura tourist information office offers guided tours of the old town for groups, individuals and school classes.

Beas de Segura has a cultural interpretation centre, two municipal museums covering different subjects and the Relic Museum of the San José del Salvador Monastery. The Museo de Usos y Costumbres de Antaño “Cantero” devotes a large part of its exhibition space to agriculture and olive oil.

The Centro de Interpretación de la Villa de Beas was built on the ruins of the castle and incorporates parts of its walls and architectural structures. The Museo-Relicario of the San José del Salvador Monastery is located in several monastic rooms that are open to the public.

Nature and Landscape

The Cueva del Agua de Beas is located 500 metres from the town centre. It consists of two chambers connected by a small but deep lake.

Monte Fuente Pinilla lies within the nature park and features limestone peaks, a montane pine forest, holm oaks, ground vegetation consisting of rosemary and juniper, and moist areas.

The Paraje Valparaíso is a natural area beside the Arroyo Valparaíso stream, which flows into the Río Beas. It is characterised by abundant water and, above all, riverside vegetation; it also has tree-filled gardens, springs, a small stream and picnic areas. The Picos de Natao are a limestone plateau at an altitude of 1,274 metres, offering impressive panoramic views.

Festivals and Routes

The Fiestas de San Marcos are celebrated from 22 to 25 April in honour of the saint and date back to the 15th century. The Fiestas de San Marcos include the release of a large number of tethered fighting bulls.

Since 2000, the Fiestas de San Marcos have been recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico de Andalucía. The Camino de San Juan de la Cruz is an approximately 24-kilometre-long, very demanding route with major changes in elevation and steep inclines.

Every year, a festival takes place at the Teatro-Cine Regio in Beas de Segura and is considered one of the finest expressions of Christmas folk culture in the Sierra.
