Bélmez de la Moraleda: Castle, Festivals and Nature

Castillo de Bélmez became one of the Nasrid frontier fortresses and could only be conquered by troops from Baeza around the middle of the 15th century. Since 1985, Castillo de Bélmez has been protected as a Site of Cultural Interest. The preserved historic centrepiece of Castillo de Bélmez is the keep, built on a rectangular floor plan and originally probably three storeys high. The rectangular shape of the keep, the cylindrical Torre del Lucero and the round Torre del Sol provide three different architectural points of reference for examining the history.

Culture

Torre del Lucero is a cylindrical tower located near the town that monitored the southwestern route to Huelma. Torre del Sol, also known as Torre de Bélmez, is a round rubble-stone tower with similar vaulted forms and is associated with the control of the southeast.

Festivals and Cuisine

The Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos in Bélmez de la Moraleda take place from 20 to 22 August and include two days of performances of the “Relaciones”. As part of the August festivals in honour of Nuestro Señor de la Vida, a competition to prepare migas is held in Bélmez de la Moraleda, reflecting the dish’s traditional significance locally.

Andrajos con liebre is part of the cuisine of Bélmez de la Moraleda and is also prepared there with anchovies. Choto al ajillo is considered a signature dish of the local cuisine. The cuisine therefore centres on both a festival competition and two named dishes with their own local associations.

Nature

In the Barranco del Arroyo Gargantón, mountain vegetation—including hawthorn and hornbeam stands—and rock walls meet; these provide a retreat for various bird species such as Alpine swifts, black wheatears and kestrels. The Cuevas del Chato y Baltibañas are located in a Mediterranean mountain landscape with high-quality geological and geomorphological formations and are suitable only for experienced cave explorers. In terms of nature, the rock walls of the ravine and the geological formations of the caves can be considered separately without conflating their different landscape features.

The Centro de Interpretación de las Caras de Bélmez guides visitors through the history of the phenomenon using audiovisual and graphic materials. These include its media documentation, relevant publications, as well as various theories and hypotheses. Cycling route C6 begins at Plaza Nueva in Bélmez de la Moraleda. Route C6 and the interpretation centre therefore represent two clearly distinguishable approaches: a cycling route with a named starting point and a documentary-focused exploration of the phenomenon.
