The Huerta de San Lázaro, also known as Huerta del Sordo, is classified in Bailén as an Asset of Cultural Interest (B.I.C.) in the category “Historic Site of the Battle of Bailén”.
Culture
The permanent exhibition of the Museo de la Batalla de Bailén is arranged across four floors and divided into several thematic areas. The Centro Histórico route begins at the Museo de la Batalla de Bailén and leads through the historic heart of Bailén.
The Huerta de Arteaga is home to a waterwheel of late Roman origin. The Huerta de Arteaga has been developed as a museum site within a unique historic setting. Construction work on the Iglesia Parroquial de la Encarnación began in the 15th century; on 2 May 1983, it was declared a historic-artistic monument.
Bailén is one of six municipalities in the province of Jaén where pottery workshops are currently in operation. In 1752, six kiln owners were recorded in Bailén, and in 1764 there were eight; by 1861, the number of recorded pottery workshops had risen to 28.
For a cultural focus, the exhibition, city route, religious building and historic huertas can be viewed alongside one another as different stops. The museum, historic town centre, church and museum-developed site each provide their own distinctive emphasis.
History
Six archaeological sites in Monte Público Burguillos are part of Bailén’s tourist offering and can be visited today. The “Tras las huellas de la batalla” route comprises six monoliths; they mark the most important battles and troop movements during the war.
In October, groups involved in historical reenactments travel to Bailén from all over Spain to recreate the battle using uniforms and weapons from the period.
For your planning, you can weigh cultural, historical, culinary and landscape interests separately.
Cuisine
Bailén’s traditional cuisine includes Guiñapos, also known as Andrajos, as well as Patatas con Caldo and Papas a lo pobre. Tapas routes can be enjoyed in Bailén all year round.
You can decide which focuses to combine according to your own interests and the desired pace of the trip.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Bailén, you can consider travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions alongside the local highlights. October adds a historical emphasis, while ceramics, cuisine and nature form distinct themes independently of it.
