Ribera Baja Among Caves, Mills and Olive-Covered Hills

Ribera Baja developed along the Río Frailes and grew through the concentration of mills and waterwheels; historic watermills and windmills were used here to grind wheat and olives, including Molino El Batán, for example.

Culture and History

The first settlement of Ribera Baja was located in caves that the inhabitants had dug into the terrain. Most traditional caves are used as cellars, while some are still inhabited. In the townscape, these distinctive spaces stand alongside the Ermita de San Jerónimo, a religious attraction, and the Torre de Cabeza de Molino, a notable site in Ribera Baja.

Archaeological remains from Roman times at the Cortijos de las Vegas de Paz and del Cerrato provide evidence of the first human settlements in Ribera Baja from the 1st century BC. Coins from the Iberian, Visigothic and Arab periods have also been found in Ribera Baja. During the Late Middle Ages, the town was the scene of conflicts between Castilians and Granadans.

Ribera Baja can be reached via the A-403 and JA-4302 roads. The Fiesta de las Flores is associated with 11 May, while the Fiesta del Espárrago takes place in June. The two dates mark different points in the course of the year, while the river landscape and historic sites form separate themes for planning, regardless of when you visit.
