Iznatoraf – Historic Centre, Crafts and Nature

Iznatoraf’s historic centre was designated a Bien de Interés Cultural and placed under protection in 1982.

Culture

The present-day Iglesia Parroquial de la Asunción was built between 1583 and 1591; minor additions were completed in 1602. Inside, four massive pillars separate three naves, and the vaults feature remarkable Mannerist decoration. The Ermita del Cristo de la Veracruz was built in the 17th and 18th centuries and rebuilt by local residents in the 19th century.

In Iznatoraf, the Esparto craft tradition is preserved and is used primarily to make household basketware. Women also continue to make textiles with bobbin lace for domestic use. Ajo morcilla is Iznatoraf’s signature dish. It is prepared with pork blood, fried onions, cooked rice, garlic and spices such as cinnamon and cloves.

The construction period, spatial layout, decoration and traditions of use each represent different cultural focal points, which you can examine separately when visiting the town.

History

Iznatoraf’s former strong walls enclosed eleven fortifications and nine arched gates. The Puerta de la Virgen del Postigo is one of the few surviving examples of this type of construction. It has a round arch with wooden beams and double brick arches on the inside. The extent of the fortifications and the design of the surviving gate offer two distinct historical perspectives.

Nature

The Cueva del Peinero is located near the Arroyo de las Aguascebas Grande stream, at the foot of Los Tableros (1,360 m), in the Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Nature Park southeast of Iznatoraf. The Cueva del Peinero has a shaded picnic area with barbecue facilities and drinking water, as well as a forest shelter; the site serves as a starting point for excursions into the nature park.

Above the road crossing the Cueva del Peinero recreational area, behind a small dam filled in by sediment deposits, there is a clear-water spot that invites visitors to swim in warm weather. Experiences

The Fiestas y Ferias del Cristo de la Veracruz take place in Iznatoraf during the first week of September. The main day is 3 September; at night, bull runs pass through the steep streets of the historic old town.

From Iznatoraf, the Ermita Jesús del Monte can be reached by car via the JV-7041 in 26 minutes, covering a distance of 17 km. The car can be parked there.
