Alhama de Granada: Gorges, Trails and Living Culture

At the Tajos de Alhama Natural Monument, Alhama de Granada appears as a protected landscape of contrasting features: here, the Alhama River has shaped sandstone gorges and sandstone fissures. In the General Catalogue of Andalusian Historical Heritage, the Tajos de Alhama are classified as an outstanding landscape.

Nature

Visits to the Natural Monument are possible via signposted paths or marked routes. A 6 km trail along the Camino Medieval de los Ángeles / Humedal de la Pantaneta connects historic viewpoints with the river surroundings, sections of the GR7-E4 and a wetland where waterbirds can be observed. The 13.5 km Los Crestones del Cañón de los Tajos route runs along the eastern and western slopes of the canyon and includes sections of the GR-7.

The 17 km route to the Quejigo de Júrtiga leads through Mediterranean woodland and reaches the old, particularly large Quejigo de Júrtiga oak. The 17.6 km Alhama de Granada–Los Llanos–Los Morales route combines historical heritage, traditional paths and natural landscapes. The different route lengths and landscape features give you several options for organising your plans according to your preferred duration and thematic focus.

Culture

The Iglesia Mayor de Santa María de la Encarnación is a 16th-century church. It was built at the behest of the Catholic Monarchs on the site of the former main mosque and houses a church museum with liturgical vestments and sacred furnishings from the 15th and 16th centuries.

The former prison complex of Alhama de Granada, built in 1674, is also part of the local history. The Centro de Interpretación Alhama de Granada, or CIAG for short, presents the local history and culture using multimedia and 3D technology in six themed rooms.

On 2 February, Candelaria is celebrated with bonfires, traditional Meceores, traditional verses, food and wine from the region. The Fiesta del Vino takes place every February and includes tastings of locally produced wine as well as typical dishes such as olla jameña, choto, migas, cheese and cured meats. The Carnival of Alhama and Domingo de Piñata are considered events of Andalusian tourist interest and include Murgas, Comparsas and popular verses.

Wellness

The natural thermal pools of Alhama de Granada are pools with water that remains at around 47 °C all year round.
