Campotéjar between History, Trails and Festivals

The Pilar de Campotéjar stands in the Plaza del Cristo de la Expiración and was built as a fountain in the 16th century. Its origins date back to the period when the Catholic Monarchs granted a royal livestock trail. An old inscription, six spouts and the coat of arms of the Marquises of Campotéjar are among the features of this structure.

History and Architectural Heritage

The history of the Iglesia del Cristo de la Expiración dates back to the 16th century; its construction is documented for 1546/47. The church was completed around 1754. The Mudéjar-style building has a single nave, a side chapel, a bell tower and four altars.

Trails and Landscape

Cerro Castellón is home to a gypsum deposit and a prehistoric cave that is not open to the public. The ascent of Cerro Castellón is steep but considered safe, and from the summit it offers wide views across the landscape. The Sendero Cerro Castellón Umbría Camino Basurero is a freely accessible local trail for hiking as well as mountaineering and climbing; its municipal section is 9,130 metres long.

Festivals

Campotéjar's patron saint festivities in honour of the Virgen de los Remedios take place in the last week of April.

During the three-day Tiradores ritual, the Alabardero, the Tamborilero, the Tiradores with their carbines and the standard-bearers move through Campotéjar, fire powder salutes and protect the Virgen de los Remedios during the procession. The clearly defined roles and sequence give the festival a pronounced ceremonial character within the local tradition.
