Albuñol: Coast, Early History and the Alpujarra

In Albuñol on the coast of Granada lies the Cueva de los Murciélagos. Its organic and plant remains have been exceptionally well preserved through natural drying processes; because of this preservation, the cave is one of the most remarkable Early Neolithic archaeological sites in Western Europe. The earliest direct evidence of basketry in southern Europe has been identified in the cave; it dates to a period between 9,500 and 6,200 years ago.

Culture

The Parroquia de San Patricio in Albuñol dates back to the 15th century. In the mid-20th century, people from Albuñol and La Rábita invented the agricultural system known as “enarenados”. Albuñol is one of six municipalities in the Granada Alpujarra with a coastline. The town lies between the Ahijón and Aldahayar ramblas; at the foot of Cerro de las Yeseras, they form a wide amphitheatre. The Cueva de los Murciélagos opens onto the right-hand slope of the Barranco de las Angosturas. The Las Angosturas ravine has a signposted path along which the hiking trail can be followed.

Albuñol’s townscape is characterised by narrow, steep streets and predominantly white masonry houses with rendered and smooth-finished exteriors. Albuñol can be reached via the Autovía del Mediterráneo A-7 or the N-340 national road. Near La Rábita, take the A-345, which connects the coast of Granada with the Alpujarra.
