Discover Palenciana: Church, Festivals and Hiking Trail

Nature

Palenciana can be discovered through its nature, architectural heritage and festivals. The Arroyo de las Cañas hiking trail – PR-A 8 lies within the territory of Palenciana, on the border between two comarcas in the provinces of Málaga and Córdoba, between the Llanos de Antequera and the Subbética. It can be walked.

Culture

The Parroquia de San Miguel is Palenciana's most significant monument and occupies one side of the central Plaza de Nuestra Señora del Carmen. The present-day Parroquia de San Miguel was built in 1774; its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, and it features characteristics of 18th-century Baroque architecture. Two 19th-century houses on the Plaza del Carmen, together with the façade of the parish church, form an urban ensemble.

The Ermita de San Lucas was financed at the end of the 1980s through a community fundraising campaign initiated by José Espadas. Its surrounding arcaded porticoes are particularly striking.

Traditions

During Holy Week, four processions pass through the streets of Palenciana. The Feria de la Virgen del Carmen takes place from 14 to 17 August and includes the Revoleo de bandera in front of the Virgin of Carmen. During the Romería de San Isidro, a procession takes place around the spring of the Arroyo Marbella stream. There are also traditional games; the Romera of the festival is elected by popular vote.

For trip planning, you can distinguish between hiking, architectural heritage, festival traditions and rafting as different areas of focus. Those who combine several interests can consider these topics as separate components and allocate their days accordingly, without assuming a fixed order.

Activity

The rafting base in Palenciana welcomes participants, provides the required equipment and then takes them by internal transport to the departure point.
