Culture and history

The Puente Romano de Villa del Río is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural, dates from the High Imperial period or Augustan period, and spans the Salado de Porcuna River at the boundary between the provinces of Córdoba and Jaén. The bridge stood on the Via Augusta between Castulo and Corduba and later became part of the Caliphate’s road network.

The Museo Histórico Municipal has permanent rooms dedicated to Pedro Bueno, Blas Moyano and Ginés Liébana, as well as the Beppo-Abdul Hall and an archaeological hall. The Museo Matías Prats is dedicated to the broadcaster Matías Prats Cañete and is located in the covered sports pavilion named after Matías Prats. It presents material on sports and bullfighting broadcasts, including awards such as four Ondas Awards, photographs, books, articles and journalistic reports.

The Casa Museo y Centro Creativo Cultural Pintor Pedro Bueno is located in the artist’s former home and permanently displays part of his work. The Parroquia de la Inmaculada Concepción was built in 1907 in the neo-historicist style. The Ermita de San Roque, now the Ermita de Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, is a Neoclassical chapel on Calle Alta that was built before the 17th century.

The Museo Taurino de Manolete was established as a private initiative by Francisco Laguna, who compiled an extensive archive about Manolete. The Manolete house museum can be visited by appointment. The present-day Casa Consistorial is located in a restored former Arab castle from the 11th century and was inaugurated as the town hall from 1986 onwards. The Aceñas Árabes are former Arab grain mills on the Guadalquivir; they are made of red Molinaza stone and have a round shape that withstands the pressure of the current.

Traditions and active pursuits

The traditional Rosario de la Aurora is held in Villa del Río on five Sundays in August. The procession runs from the Parroquia de la Inmaculada Concepción to the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Estrella Coronada.

The Circuito Cicloturista BTT del Alto Guadalquivir runs through Villa del Río, with eight signposted and mapped stages. The circuit comprises 95 signposted kilometres homologated as Bike Territory. Around 100 metres run past the Puente Romano de Villa del Río. The different route details help organise cycling plans according to scope and stage structure.

Landscape and water

In the municipality of Villa del Río, river meadows, uplands and the Campiña landscape come together. Fishing and kayaking are possible as leisure activities on the Guadalquivir in Villa del Río.

Getting there

Access to the platforms is available at Villa del Río railway station. The A-4 motorway runs through the municipality; two junctions allow entry to and exit from the area.
