Montoro: Holiday Apartment and Guadalquivir Meander

As it passes through Montoro, the Guadalquivir forms a sharply curved meander that has cut into the Paleozoic rocks of the foothills of the Sierra Morena. It is considered one of the best national examples of an epigenic meander. Montoro lies on a small hill beside the Guadalquivir, which divides the town into two districts. The landscape brings together the mountains, river and Campiña.

Culture and History

Montoro was declared a Historic-Artistic Ensemble in 1969. The Museo Arqueológico Municipal de Montoro is housed in the former church of Santa María del Castillo de la Mota, which was built in the 13th century over older Christian and Arab structures.

The Museo Arqueológico Municipal de Montoro was founded to preserve, research and promote the archaeology and history of Montoro and its municipality. Its collection includes archaeological materials from prehistory to the Middle Ages, including a Roman thoracata and the head of a lar.

The Museo de la Semana Santa de Montoro presents processional objects, original sculptures, processional structures, historical photographs, glass negatives and religious textiles in a permanent exhibition. It is located in the preserved parts of a former manor house with an intricately carved door made of Molinaza stone.

The bridge over the river in Montoro is considered a touristically interesting structure dating from the 15th century. The Church of San Bartolomé in Montoro is also considered a touristically interesting structure dating from the 15th century. The remains of the Castillo de la Mota are among Montoro’s touristically interesting sights.

The building de las Tercias now houses the Museo del Pintor Rodríguez Luna. The building was erected in 1748 by Francisco Luis de Mora to store oil, wine and wheat from the tithe. The museum preserves part of the work of this painter, who was born in Montoro.

Traditions and Routes

Montoro offers five historical routes covering the periods of Roman times, the Middle Ages, the Early Modern period and the modern era through to the present day. Historical routes and a single stage of the GR-48 are different formats; the periods mentioned and the possible activities can be weighted differently when planning your own day.

Montoro’s Semana Santa preserves traditional values and elements and has been recognised as a “Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional de Andalucía”. The Montoro–Marmolejo stage of the GR-48 is suitable for hiking or horseback riding.
