Vejer de la Frontera – Castle, Museums and Hiking Trails
Vejer de la Frontera was declared a historic-artistic site in 1976. The municipality of Vejer de la Frontera includes the old walled complex, museums, hiking trails and a contrasting landscape.
Culture and History
The old walled complex of Vejer dates from the 15th century and covers just over 4 hectares. It preserves four named gateways: the Arco de la Segur, the Arco de la Villa, the Arco de Sancho IV and the Arco de Puerta Cerrada.
Vejer Castle dates from the 10th and 11th centuries and stands at the highest point of the town. Its battlements offer views across the entire town.
The Palace of the Marqués de Tamarón houses the Vejer Museum of History and Archaeology, with 13 rooms covering the historical development of the area from the Palaeolithic to the present day. The Municipal Museum of Customs and Traditions of Vejer displays tools and artefacts from agriculture and other traditional occupations. The Vejer Museum of History and Archaeology is located at Calle Marqués de Tamarón 10 in Vejer de la Frontera.
The tourist information office provides visitors with a town map and information about the activities available in Vejer. The Noche Flamenca is considered a noteworthy Andalusian event with tourist appeal and is scheduled for the third Saturday in August.
