Los Barrios – Nature Park, Culture and Pilgrimage

Los Barrios is one of thirteen municipalities that make up Los Alcornocales Nature Park. Between canuto gallery forest, species-rich woodlands, botanical gardens, historic buildings and a traditional pilgrimage, the town presents a diverse picture. When planning your trip, nature, culture and local festivities can be considered as different focal points.

Nature and Trails

The Valdeinfierno Trail runs through a canuto gallery forest. Its first section is accessible to people with physical disabilities. Since 15 May 2026, the Valdeinfierno Trail and the corresponding section of the Valdeinfierno Green Corridor have been temporarily closed to the public because of landslides on a slope that remains unstable.

The Municipal Tourist Office and the Los Alcornocales Information Point in Los Barrios offer guides to Los Alcornocales Nature Park and can arrange permits for routes there, where required. Los Barrios also has rural routes through species-rich woodlands with varying levels of difficulty and trail lengths. A mountain biking centre complements this network of trails with several routes for mountain biking. Different trail lengths and difficulty levels can be considered as separate points of comparison when planning a day trip.

In the immediate surroundings of Los Barrios are the marshes of the Palmones River, which provide a resting area for thousands of birds. The landscape therefore ranges from wooded trails in the town to a wetland in the immediate surroundings.

Culture and History

The Antiguo Pósito del Trigo was built in 1768 and extended in 1779. The restored building is used as an exhibition hall and has a large barrel vault with lunettes. The parish church of San Isidro Labrador is considered the most important building in Los Barrios in terms of art history; it was built in the first half of the 18th century.

Casa Urrutia houses the Los Barrios Natural History Museum. It displays 10,000 pieces from a collection of more than 50,000 objects. The collection includes fossils, minerals, shells, corals, insects, sands, Asian Buddhas and Asian vases.

Casa de la Cultura Isidro Gómez is now housed in a restored building. It has two Andalusian courtyards and an elongated room with an original vaulted ceiling. A permanent exhibition reconstructs rural life in Los Barrios at the beginning of the 20th century.

Nature

The Jardín Botánico is the first public botanical garden in Los Barrios. Covering 17,500 m², it features exhibitions of a diverse mix of native and introduced plants as well as walking areas. Another garden complex is Parque Botánico Betty Molesworth, which includes a 47,000 m² open meadow area available for general use, an artificial stream and four cascades.

The two sites have different focuses: the Jardín Botánico centres on plant exhibitions and walking areas, while Parque Botánico Betty Molesworth is characterised by its meadow, stream and cascades. These described features provide clear guidance when distinguishing between a botanical collection and an open landscaped park.

Pilgrimage and Local Cuisine

The pilgrimage to San Isidro Labrador covers approximately 20 km from the centre of Los Barrios to the Montera del Torero area. The pilgrimage includes concerts and dancing; a rural festival takes place in Los Alcornocales Nature Park.

As part of this festivity, tapas and dishes featuring chicharrón are offered for tasting at stalls run by local food businesses and butcher shops. The pilgrimage therefore combines a route of around 20 km with music, dancing and a festival in the nature park.
