Discover Vícar: Aqueducts, Routes and Festivals

Vícar combines Roman water-engineering history, signposted routes through different landscapes and a year-round festival calendar. During trip planning, these different themes can be considered alongside short walks, longer circular routes, cultural events and sporting challenges.

Culture and History

The Villa de Vícar, also known as Vícar pueblo, forms the historic centre of the municipality. The façades of the houses feature murals with poems and stories, as well as colourful designs. One notable building is the Iglesia Fortaleza de Vícar: it was built between 1558 and 1570, acquired a distinctly defensive character through its tower and battlements, and was declared a Monumento and Bien de Interés Cultural on 29 June 1985.

Another historical focal point lies at the foot of the Sierra de Gádor. This is where the Roman Hidráulico Carcauz complex is located, with aqueducts and irrigation channels. It includes the Acueducto de los 20 ojos, the Acueducto por Rematar and the Acueducto de los Poyos. The Vía Ferrata de Vícar passes beneath the latter aqueduct, runs around the Barranco de Carcauz and is graded K3–K4.

Landscape and Nature

The Peñón de Bernal is of great scenic value and offers panoramic views over Poniente almeriense. Prior permission is required for traditional climbing on existing routes there. Climbing, abseiling and similar sports or active-tourism activities are prohibited at the Peñón de Bernal from December to May.

Hikers, mountain bikers and nature lovers explore the area around the Barranco del Tartel. The Fuente del Tartel provides fresh drinking water from a spring supplied via the Complejo Hidráulico de Carcauz. At particularly scenic spots along Vícar’s routes, the Rincones con Encanto initiative provides wooden benches. There, visitors can rest, enjoy panoramic views and take in the area’s cultural heritage.

Other places you can discover include Terque, El Cortijo Grande, Guazamara, Tabernas, Carboneras, Los Navarros, Fuente Amarga and Garrucha.

Routes and Active Experiences

The Bulevar Ciudad de Vícar is a more than four-kilometre-long promenade characterised by trees and green spaces. Sculptures and monuments make it a place that can be experienced as an open-air museum. The Conjuros de Vícar route complements this range with a more than twelve-kilometre circular route whose start and finish are in the Villa de Vícar. It leads to the municipality’s most significant viewpoints and, on the descent, follows the old Roman road.

The Ruta de los Bancos promotes active tourism, passes through part of the Sierra de Gádor and reaches various sights in Vícar. The municipal programme also includes signposted routes through different landscapes. It is not a competition, but is designed as a personal challenge. The different route lengths and landscape settings provide a clear basis for organising your daily plans.

For cycling enthusiasts, the Vícar Bárbara is on the calendar as a mountain-bike event. The start and finish are at the Palacio de Deportes Ciudad de Vícar. The 2026 edition’s course was 54 kilometres long and included 1,500 metres of ascent.

La Envía Golf lies on the slopes of the Sierra de Gádor and offers views of Almería Bay. The complex has an 18-hole golf course with a par of 70.

Festivals and Stage Performances

«Paseando entre Velas» reached its twelfth edition in 2026 and has attracted thousands of visitors for more than a decade. The event is established as a festival within Andalusian astrotourism. During the event, Vícar’s emblematic corners are illuminated by thousands of candles; the programme includes live music and street performances.

Vícar’s year-round festival calendar combines tradition, public participation and local celebrations. The Carnaval de Vícar traditionally includes costume competitions for children and adults, musical performances, DJ sessions and the Entierro de la Sardina procession. Semana Santa comprises liturgical celebrations and processions organised by local brotherhoods. On Easter Sunday, the traditional procession of San Benito also takes place in the Villa de Vícar.

The Teatro Auditorio Ciudad de Vícar offers theatre performances for adults and children. The Parque de la Infancia opens up its own themed world, with 7,000 square metres and three themed areas. The Vícar Doméstico area recreates traditional buildings from the municipality, such as aqueducts, typical houses and the town hall. It also includes a walk-through tour for young children.
