In the Baroque Museum, Šmarje Pri Jelšah preserves and exhibits 43 original wooden sculptures from the chapels of the Šmarje Calvary, as well as other Baroque furnishings from the chapels and St. Roch's Church. The Baroque Museum uses multimedia technology to present additional Baroque monuments from Obsotelje and Kozjansko.

Culture

St. Roch's Church is one of Slovenia's outstanding artistic monuments. It features the architectural language of the 17th century, with a presbytery, a somewhat wider nave and a bell tower. The frescoes in the presbytery predominantly depict scenes from the legend of St. Roch, as well as apostles and Church Fathers.

The parish church of Šmarje pri Jelšah is considered the oldest building in the town and was first mentioned in written sources in 1236. Its bell tower contains 400-year-old frescoes that were discovered during restoration work. In 1878, the parish church was enlarged and supplemented with a northern and a southern chapel.

History

Jelšingrad was surrounded by a park; allegorical figures representing the four seasons stood at the edge of the courtyard. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, Jelšingrad was redesigned in the Oriental style and was subsequently considered one of the most beautiful castle buildings in Štajerska. One of the newly developed tourist experiences around Jelšingrad is a virtual reality presentation on the history of the castle.

Pilgrimage

The Calvary is a stone path, partly equipped with steps, that climbs the northern slope in zigzag lines to St. Roch's Church; 14 chapels lie along the way. The fourteenth chapel of the Calvary includes the Holy Staircase and a Holy Sepulchre; its stairway has 30 steps.

Every year, on 15 August, the feast of the parish patron saint, the Assumption of Mary, and on 16 August, the feast day of St. Roch, a traditional pilgrimage gathering takes place with more than 1,000 people.
