At the Rogatec Open-Air Museum, Rogatec showcases the sub-Pannonian vernacular architecture typical of the Obsotelje area, dating from the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. The museum is also Slovenia’s largest open-air museum and a cultural monument of national importance.

Culture

One of the defining historical sites is Strmol Mansion. The manor house was first mentioned in 1436: at that time, the Counts of Cilli granted Jakob Strmol from Cerklje na Gorenjskem a tower near Rogatec. With its strong Baroque influence, stucco, frescoes and attractively painted façades, Strmol Mansion is one of Slovenia’s important feudal buildings.

The preserved medieval market centre of Rogatec is also considered a cultural monument. Its layout can be identified by two distinctive features: a rectangular market square lies at the centre, while a service road runs parallel behind the eastern row of market buildings. This arrangement forms part of the traditional structure of the medieval market.

In the surroundings of Rogatec, an approximately 600-metre-long, easy trail on Donačka Gora offers a self-guided forest-bathing experience on the edge of a beech primeval forest. The trail begins at Rudijev Dom and initially follows a marked mountain path towards Čermožiše.

Rogatec can be reached by train from Celje, Šentjur, Grobelno, Šmarje pri Jelšah, Stranje and Rogaška Slatina. Intercity buses connect the town with Rogaška Slatina, Šmarje pri Jelšah, Celje and the surrounding towns.
