Landscape

Predjama Castle has stood in the middle of a 123-metre-high rock face for more than 800 years. A cave lies beneath the castle and is inhabited by a colony of bats in winter. It is closed to visitors during the bats’ winter dormancy.

Culture

The visitor centre of Predjama Castle houses the Stara Dama Museum with two collections: the collection on the First World War and the Isonzo Front, and the hunting collection. The collection on the First World War and the Isonzo Front focuses in particular on the Isonzo Front. It shaped this area as the hinterland of the front and was logistically connected with supplying the front.

The hunting collection displays numerous forest animals that live in the local area. These include birds, deer, wild cats, wolves and bears. It also presents the work of hunters and forestry wardens, as well as life in the forest.

In the immediate vicinity of Predjama Castle stands the Žalostne Matere božje branch church, the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows. It was consecrated in 1449 by the Bishop of Trieste, Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, the future Pope Pius II. Its interior contains medieval murals from the mid-15th century, commissioned by the lords of Jamski, probably by Erasmus.

History

Visitors can see the armoury, chapel, kitchen and torture chamber of Predjama Castle. Predjama Castle was also used as a filming location for numerous documentaries and feature films.

Experiences

Every summer, Predjama Castle hosts the Erasmus Knights’ Tournament. Knights, archers, swordsmen and riders demonstrate their fighting skills there, as well as the historical way of life in a knights’ camp.

The Grajska kolesarska pot is a circular cycling route that passes through Predjama.
