Holiday apartment in Pivka: lakes, wildlife and culture
Pivka leads from a landscape with 17 intermittent lakes to an engaging exploration of wildlife, military history and regional culture. At the DINA Pivka Centre, ten interactive stations provide fascinating insights into bears, wolves and lynxes. Using virtual and augmented reality technologies, visitors can explore how animals and humans perceive the world, as well as animal tracks.
Nature
The Pivka Intermittent Lakes Landscape Park comprises 17 intermittent lakes. They are spread across an aerial distance of 15 kilometres throughout the Pivka Basin. The Ekomuzej Pivških presihajočih jezer offers an interactive presentation of the lakes and their formation, shaped by the area's distinctive geological structure and uneven distribution of rainfall. At the same time, the Ekomuzej is a gateway to the landscape park and a starting point for hiking and cycling routes.
Trails
The well-marked, 91-kilometre Velika Krpanova pot hiking trail begins at Pivka railway station. Maps for the route are available at the Ekomuzej Pivških presihajočih jezer. A mobile app guides visitors along trails between the Pivka lakes. The short Palška pot is also suitable for small children. Those interested in a cycling route can find another starting point at Kolesarska pot gradov: it begins at the Park vojaške zgodovine.
History
The Park vojaške zgodovine Pivka is a museum and visitor centre on the grounds of the former Italian barracks in Hrastje pri Pivki. It features an extensive collection of tanks and artillery, a collection of aircraft, the 33-110 steam locomotive from the Second World War, and the P-913 Zeta sabotage submarine. During a guided tour of the underground fortification on Primož, visitors can explore 500 metres of preserved underground tunnels.
A thematic educational trail leads from the Park vojaške zgodovine to the Alpski zid fortifications on the nearby Primož hill. Krpanov dom is also part of Pivka's cultural offering: it has a modern cinema auditorium with films for children and adults. At Kino Pivka, the arthouse cinema programme is co-financed by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia.
Culture
The Pivka House of Culture is the central gallery for contemporary visual art in the area between Ljubljana and Koper. Stone crosses are also part of Pivka's cultural and landscape character. From the 17th century to the present day, they have been among the most enduring and striking features of this character.
At Šobčeva domačija, the traditional Brkini schnapps distilling tradition is presented through an ethnographic collection and a short film. At Petrovi in Narin, visitors can take part in the “From Grain to Bread” programme. Parska golobina is one of the places with the oldest discovered traces of humans in Slovenia.
Getting there
Pivka is connected to Ljubljana by a direct, regular train service. This means that, alongside routes through the lake landscape and cultural attractions, there is also an explicitly named connection to the Slovenian capital.
