Šmihel nad Mozirjem combines a protected townscape with a distinctive rural landscape and a marked mountain hiking trail to Golte Landscape Park. Between its historic settlement structure, St. Michael’s Church, and traditional events, the town reveals characteristics that are closely connected with its surroundings and history.
Culture and townscape
Šmihel nad Mozirjem has the status of a cultural heritage settlement monument. As a protected settlement monument, the town preserves its original settlement structure, including its road network, parcel layout, loose development along the roads, and public and private open spaces. A walled church stands on elevated ground in the center of Šmihel.
Individual buildings also preserve visible traces of history. A fresco and a cross can be found on the Goličnik house at Šmihel 12. The memorial plaque on the birthplace of Vladimir Levstik was installed in 1980. The Slovenian poet, writer, and translator Vladimir Levstik (1886–1957) was born in Šmihel nad Mozirjem on January 18, 1886.
St. Michael’s Church
The construction history of St. Michael’s Church is marked by several precisely dated milestones: the foundation stone was laid on May 12, 1602, the chancel was built in 1604, and the church was consecrated on December 16, 1631. Ivan Fantoni added a later artistic touch by painting the interior of St. Michael’s Church in 1903.
