Gornji Grad in Slovenia is associated with the Cathedral of St. Hermagoras and Fortunatus, Počrevinov grič and Menina planina.
Culture and history
Measured by volume, St. Hermagoras and Fortunatus is the largest cathedral in Slovenia. The former late Baroque monastery church now serves as the parish church of Gornji Grad. Its elaborately designed interior features numerous paintings, frescoes, vaults and stone sculptures.
The Štekl houses gallery spaces on the ground floor and museum collections on the upper floors. Prior arrangements are required to visit the museum collections of Gornji Grad. Special highlights of the Janez Mavrič Collection include Zadrečka pottery and Kokarski hats. The Janez Mavrič Collection is designated as a cultural monument of local importance.
At the Herbal Village in Gornji Grad, visitors can take part in a workshop about traditional herbs, their significance and uses, as well as the stories and tales associated with them.
Hiking and trails
The Attems Trail is a 2.4-kilometre, 45-minute circular route from the TIC via Spodnji trg and Podsmrečje back to the TIC. It conveys the history of Gornji Grad’s town centre and passes, among other places, the cathedral and a museum in the former defensive tower.
The trail to Počrevinov grič is 2.4 kilometres long, takes one hour and leads from the TIC to Počrevinov grič, where there is a viewpoint. The whole of Gornji Grad can be seen from this viewpoint. Another trail with a spiritual connection is the 7-kilometre pilgrimage route linking the Cathedral of St. Hermagoras and Fortunatus in Gornji Grad with the Church of Marija Zvezda in Nova Štifta.
For a longer mountain route, the Gornji Grad–Sv. Lenart–Veliki Rogatec trail begins in Gornji Grad and ends at Veliki Rogatec. The trail is 9.12 kilometres long and takes 4 hours and 15 minutes in one direction.
Nature
The highest point of Menina planina is Vivodnik, at 1,508 metres; there is a viewing tower there. A marked route also leads from Gornji Grad via Semprimožnik to Dom na Menini planini.
