Kamnica: Holiday apartment between the Drava, vineyards and Kozjak

Kamnica lies on the left bank of the Drava, where vineyards and the hilly Kozjak meet. The place is already mentioned in written sources from 1093 in connection with the Kamniški potok, which appears there as “torrentem Gêmnitz”.

Culture

The Church of St. Martin in Kamnica is first mentioned towards the end of the 11th century. It stands on a slight rise in the middle of the Kamnica settlement. During a renovation begun in 1743, it was completely transformed in the Baroque style; however, Gothic architectural elements are still visible on the exterior.

The Baroque furnishings include wall paintings by Georg Raffa and Anton Lerchinger, Baroque altars and a pulpit, as well as an oratory by Jožef Holzinger. The Kamnica parish house contains a Baroque fresco depicting a bagpipe player; its construction phases are dated to 1696, 1818 and 1829.

Landscape

Mariborski otok is a natural island in the Drava and the largest river island in Slovenia. At the same time, it is the only island in the country that is not typically covered with gravel. Its nature is protected by local and numerous national regulations, while the outdoor swimming pool on the island has been declared a cultural monument.

A nature trail runs along the edge of Mariborski otok. The seasonal outdoor swimming pool operates in summer.

Paths and destinations

A path along the Kamniški potok leads to its mouth at the Drava. Just before the mouth lies Babja kopel, a basin with rapids.

Sveti Urban is a popular hiking destination with a winemaking tradition and the Church of St. Urban. Several paths lead up the hill, including the “Trim pot” and the route via Medič; it also offers a view of Maribor. A paved road leads to Sveti Urban, allowing easy access by car and making it well suited for cyclists.

Huzarjev skok on the Kamniški potok can be reached on foot and by bicycle. Above Kamnica, a short path leads to mysterious rock formations in the forest; it is also suitable for children and offers a beautiful view of the Drava.

For your planning, short paths, waterways, hilltop destinations and seasonal activities can be given different priorities.

Wine and horse-riding activities

At the Open Cellars Day in Kamnica, visitors can visit nine winemakers for a contribution covering the glass and taste at least three wines. At the Kamnica Hippodrome, members of the public can rent horses for riding or to learn riding skills.
