Culture and history

The Synagogue of Maribor is an important monument to Jewish cultural heritage in Slovenia and is one of the oldest surviving synagogues in Central Europe. Since 2011, it has operated as an independent public institution under the name “Center of Jewish Cultural Heritage Synagogue Maribor”. The Jewish quarter also preserves traces of its past: Several features of a Jewish ghetto can be found in some of the surviving ground-floor buildings, including Židovska 3.

Maribor Castle has been the seat of the Regional Museum of Maribor since 1938. There, the museum presents the permanent exhibition „Between the Glamour and the Misery of the Middle Ages“. Lent is also the oldest part of the city of Maribor.

Wine and tastings

The Vinag wine cellar is particularly notable. It is one of the largest and oldest traditional wine cellars in Europe and has more than two kilometres of underground tunnels and 15,000 m² of cellar space. Vinag offers tourist packages with an expert-guided tour of the wine cellar, varying numbers of tasting samples and optional snacks. The offers therefore already differ in their scope and in the components included.

A visit to the Old Vine Museum includes a tasting of Queen’s Wine or fruit juice. The Old Vine itself also offers a guided tasting of Styrian wines inspired by a sommelier, accompanied by culinary greetings. The Old Vine was entered in the Guinness Book of Records in 2004.

Landscape and nature

The Maribor–Pohorje destination includes green hills in the easternmost part of the Slovenian Alps, with numerous hiking and mountain trails located close to the city of Maribor.
