Žalec can be discovered through tangible evidence of hops, beer and local history. Fontana piv Zeleno zlato pays tribute to the hop-growing heritage of the Lower Savinja Valley and Žalec. With a purchased glass, visitors can sample six 1-decilitre portions of beer there. This places both the regional hop-growing tradition and a clearly described form of beer tasting at the centre of one location.

Culture

Žalec’s historical landmarks include the defensive tower, which was built at the beginning of the 16th century. It is the only surviving part of the former fortified enclosure. St Nicholas Church preserves a portal in the bell tower dating from 1670, as well as other historically significant furnishings. These include gravestones and a well-known oil painting of Saint Nicholas by Bergant.

Savinova hiša is the birthplace of the general and composer Risto Savin. The house contains his memorial room, the gallery of visual artists from the Savinja region and the Jelica Žuža Salon. Another aspect of local history is presented by the Žalec Firefighting Museum, which preserves more than 600 pieces of firefighting-related material and exhibits. Zotlova kovačija is a 16th-century building with preserved historical architectural elements.

Routes

The Savinova sprehajalna pot begins at Savinova hiša and leads to twelve stations in Žalec. Another named route is the Od hmelja do piva tourist trail.
