Petrovče focuses on sacred history, monuments, traditional events and routes through the surrounding area. The Marian Shrine of Petrovče has particular significance in church history: Pope John Paul II elevated it to the status of a basilica in 1984. The so-called Plainer Altar, dating from 1605, is the oldest altar in the church of Petrovče.

Culture

One of the important cultural sites is Novo Celje Castle, which is listed as a monument of local importance under registration number EŠD 491. The entrance is decorated with statues of Samson and Hercules, created by the sculptor Vid Königer. Memorial ceremonies are held there every year on All Souls’ Day. The Teržan Chapel was built in the first half of the 18th century. Following its restoration, it received a statue of Mary, Queen of Peace, from a demolished memorial chapel in Arja vas.

Next to the church in Petrovče stands the group known as the Petrovški križi: three life-size stone figures. After the Second World War, they were moved to the church because the Celje–Ljubljana road was being widened. The Petrovški križi were created in the mid-18th century by the late Baroque sculptor Vid Königer from Graz.

Landscape

According to local tradition, a linden tree approximately one hundred years old stands next to the village church in Petrovče. It is under the professional supervision of the Celje Regional Unit of the Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation. The mountains of Gozdnik, Kjumberk, Golce and Tolsti Vrh are located in the surroundings of Petrovče.

Events and Routes

The Petrovče Tourist Association participates in the Hmeljska pot programme. The hike along the Hmeljska pot starts and ends in Novo Celje. Exhibitions of contemporary art are also held there during the summer months. Local events in Petrovče include corn husking and a chestnut picnic in Mala Pirešica. Another recurring tradition is Košnja po starem, a traditional mowing event at the Obrezov kozolec in Zaloška Gorica.
