Holiday apartment in Polzela – cultural monuments and paths along the Savinja

Komenda Castle stands on a hill in the center of Polzela. The building is an important cultural and historical monument and was owned by the Order of Malta from the 13th to the 18th century.

Culture and history

The completely renovated Komenda Castle has rooms for tourist, cultural, and social activities. The entire site is an official wedding venue. Komenda Castle also displays a collection of exhibits belonging to the Sovereign Order of Malta.

In the municipality of Polzela, Mešičev mlin was one of the best-known mills in Polzela. The operation comprised a mill and a sawmill, and later also a generator for household lighting. The historic mill buildings of Mešičev mlin have been restored.

The Church of St. Margaret stands in the present-day center of Polzela and is first mentioned in 1255. In 1263, it became a commandery church; a relief of the Maltese cross in the presbytery points to this. In front of the church stands a black locust tree considered to be the thickest black locust tree in Slovenia.

Nature and paths

Šenek Park and Manor are located at a scenic viewpoint on the northern edge of Polzela. Šenek Park is designated as a cultural monument. It contains more than thirty tree species that are unusual for the local surroundings.

In Šenek Park, the Turistično društvo Občine Polzela has established an educational trail where visitors can walk at any time of year. In 2022, 500 meters of illuminated walking paths were created there. The park also has a children's playground.

Culture and collections

In the municipality of Polzela, Cajhnov kozolec presents a small ethnological collection of old farming tools and equipment. The Muzej starih traktorjev displays a collection of more than twenty restored vintage tractors.

Mobility

The public bicycle rental system KolesCE has a station with two electric bicycles and one conventional bicycle at the Polzela sports hall behind the municipal building. Before their first rental, users of the KolesCE system must register free of charge.

Pot ob Savinji is a gravel path that runs continuously along the Savinja from Šempeter and is used by cyclists from Polzela. The route is also used by runners, hikers, and walkers.
