Holiday apartment in Braslovče: Hop Festival, History and Lakeside Trails

Braslovče presents Slovenian local history not only through individual buildings, but also through festivals, paths and preserved traces of the market town. The traditional hop festival Dan hmeljarjev is celebrated every year on the second weekend of August. A festival procession makes its way through Trg Braslovče to the event venue.

Culture and History

In 1360, Braslovče was granted market rights by Counts Herman I Celjski and Viljem Celjski. The historic market-town layout of Trg Braslovče has been preserved to this day. One of the most significant buildings is the parish church of Marije Vnebovzete, considered the oldest building in Braslovče. Today, a tower and part of the wall remain from the church. Its history is also linked to Veronika Deseniška: the second wife of Count Friderik II Celjski was temporarily buried at the church in 1428.

Another historical trace leads to Legant. From at least the second half of the 14th century, the building served as the market town’s administrative building; the market judge was based there. An inscription preserved above the entrance suggests that Legant once had a guard and military function. The lapidarium at the cemetery in Braslovče preserves old gravestones of cultural and historical value and is regarded as both a cultural monument and a tourist attraction.

Lake and Trails

Lake Braslovško jezero is located near Trg Braslovče in the surrounding area of Braslovče. A forest educational and walking trail of approximately 1.5 kilometres runs around the lake. Lake Braslovško jezero also offers opportunities for fishing and nature-oriented leisure activities. Cycle Route No. 16 starts at the lake and runs through Braslovče.

The paths to the historical sights also connect different sides of the town. The Veronike Deseniške Trail leads from Žovnek Castle past Lake Žovneško jezero and through Trg Braslovče to the Church of Marije Vnebovzete. In the surrounding area of Braslovče, an approximately 15-minute, moderately strenuous walking trail leads to Žovnek Castle. The route includes a tour of the market town of Braslovče, with a visit to Legant and an introduction to the history of the market town.

Places for Special Experiences

Žovnek Castle is considered one of the oldest castles in Slovenia. The Skup’n plac event venue in Braslovče is home to one of the largest and oldest kozolci in Slovenia. It is also the location of one of six VIT points belonging to the Eco-Museum of Hop-Growing and Brewing, based in Žalec. Today, Skup’n plac is a venue for numerous events, intergenerational workshops, meetings, private celebrations and other gatherings.

In the surrounding area of Braslovče, in Podvrh, a private collection on the history of the First and Second World Wars displays more than 1,000 exhibits. These include documents, letters, postcards, weapons and uniforms. The Žovneška avantura za otroke programme is available for children’s groups of all ages in the surrounding area. It is historical, exploratory, creative and movement-oriented; its content can be adapted.
