Discover Vransko: Culture, Walking Routes and Holiday Apartments

Vransko combines Roman history, distinctive cultural sites and several routes that begin or end in the town. The town’s development is connected with the ancient Roman road between Emona and Celeia. The location of the market square is also clearly defined: it is one kilometre from the Ljubljana–Celje motorway section.

History

An important historical landmark is the parish church of St Michael, which was first mentioned in 1123. Its furnishings include a marble altar, a work by the renowned sculptor F. Robba. The Schwentnerjeva hiša is also closely connected with the town’s history. The distinctive two-storey market house dates from the mid-19th century and is the birthplace of the modernist publisher Lavoslav Schwentner. Today, the Schwentnerjeva hiša is one of the central cultural institutions in Vransko.

Culture

Almost the entire household furnishings have been preserved in the Schwentnerjeva hiša. They illustrate domestic culture around the transition from the 19th to the 20th century. The house’s former magazine also serves as an event space. The TIC Vransko tourist information centre is also located in the former magazine. The TIC provides information about the natural and cultural heritage, events and leisure opportunities in the Municipality of Vransko.

Another collection is located at the pri Knežari farm on the local road between Brode and Vransko. The ethnological collection mainly displays agricultural and craft tools. It includes a complete blacksmith’s workshop with individual tools that are more than 200 years old. The Muzej motociklov GROM focuses on something completely different: it preserves more than 150 restored motorcycles from Europe and around the world. The museum is located at Vransko 29, 3305 Vransko, Slovenia; free parking spaces are available directly at the Muzej motociklov GROM.

Events

Local life is also reflected in recurring events. Every year on Shrove Saturday at 2 p.m., a carnival procession takes place through the market square in Vransko. On Holy Saturday, Easter foods and Easter eggs are displayed at a stall there. This is followed by a tasting and a convivial gathering at the stall.

Routes and Activities

Several routes of varying lengths, starting or ending in Vransko, are available for walks and longer outings. The Schwentnerjeva Walking Route is 4.3 kilometres long. It leads from Vransko via Videm, Prapreče and Tabor back to Vransko; the starting point is the Schwentnerjeva hiša. The Church-to-Church Route is 27.8 kilometres long and begins and ends in Vransko.

V2 – Po poti vranske kulturne dediščine is 14.9 kilometres long. The route leads from Vransko via Tešova, Brode with a hop field, Stopnik, Prekopa, Čeplje and Brode back to Vransko. Sport climbing is offered at Športna dvorana Vransko. Športna dvorana Vransko is accessible to people with reduced mobility.
