Holiday Apartment in Smrdáky: Spa, Park and Culture

Smrdáky is a spa town with an unusually clear profile: its focus is on sulphur-rich mineral water, therapeutic treatments, an extensive spa park and a historically shaped townscape. The medicinal mineral water contains 3,400 mg of mineral salts and 680 mg of hydrogen sulphide per litre. Because of its hydrogen sulphide content, it is used for therapeutic baths.

Spa

The treatment options at Smrdáky Spa include therapies for non-infectious skin diseases and musculoskeletal disorders. Sulphur-rich peloids from Smrdáky are used in the form of compresses on joints and the spine. Phototherapy is also part of the treatment for the skin diseases listed in the indications catalogue. The history of the spa dates back to 1832–1833, when Baron Joseph Vietoris founded Smrdáky.

Landscape

The spa park in Smrdáky covers 16 hectares. Its creation is connected with the draining of marshes. This means that the spa is defined not only by its water, but also by a park whose landscape history is precisely documented. A marked cycling route also passes through Smrdáky.

Culture and History

An important historic building in the town is the Roman Catholic Church of Saint Martin of Tours. It dates from 1680 and was extensively renovated in 1928. Inside is a rare organ made by Martin Šaško in 1862. The dates of construction, renovation and organ building therefore belong to different chapters of the church's history.

North of and above Smrdáky stands the preserved Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk. It was built in 1831 in a newly established cemetery. Its furnishings include a Baroque wooden altar structure from the first half of the 18th century. Another distinct historic feature in the town is the Trinity sculpture, created in 1927.

On the village square in Smrdáky stands the ensemble of St. Florian, St. Vendelín and St. Rozália. The spa manor house is also part of the town's history. It has been reconstructed and modernised several times and is still in use.

The religious buildings are spread across different periods and locations. The church stands in the town, while the chapel is north of and above it; the village square and manor house complement these individual historic sites. In this way, architectural history, furnishings and present-day use emerge as several elements of the townscape, each retaining its own temporal and spatial context.

Public bus services run along road III/05112; there is a bus stop in Smrdáky. Visitors can therefore explore the town using both documented bus services and a marked cycling route within the town area. The spa's history, the park and the religious buildings each offer a different focus within the same small town.
