Sekule: Nature, Culture and Holiday Apartment on the Morava

In the cadastral area of Sekule, the confluence of the Morava and Dyje forms a tripoint where the Czech Republic, Austria and Slovakia border one another within a small area. For planning purposes, nature, culture, crafts and exercise can be considered separately, as they are associated with different places and activities.

Culture

The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is a historicist Neo-Gothic basilica-type building dating from 1878. The church grounds contain a Baroque, polychrome monument to Saint John of Nepomuk dating from 1797.

The burial chapel of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary has a medieval core and houses a traditional wooden Pietà. The grounds of the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary include stone grave crosses from the 18th century, from the Baroque period.

The Sekulské múzeum presents the past of Záhorie through traditional costumes, ceramics and historic household objects. At the Sekulské múzeum, you can observe the production of Sekule ceramics and try working on the potter’s wheel or decorating ceramics. This brings historical insights and hands-on creativity together in one place.

It is precisely this combination that distinguishes the museum station from the sacred buildings: in the church and at the chapel, architectural history, religious art and traditional forms take centre stage, while the Sekulské múzeum also offers a practical approach to ceramics. This allows visitors to experience different cultural themes side by side during the tour, without reducing them to a single impression.

The Kristkova Podyjská glyptotéka is an artistic-philosophical pilgrimage route connecting five regions in three countries. Since 15 August 2015, Sekule has been home to the reconstructed version “Hľadajúci – organické formy” of the Kristekova glyptotéka.

Nature and Exercise

The pine forests near Sekule are suitable for mushroom picking and walks. Deer and wild boar are found in the floodplain forests along the Morava. The different landscapes and opportunities for observing wildlife place different emphasis from the historical sites.

A cycle path runs along the Morava towards Devín and onwards to the place where the Morava flows into the Danube. Walks and the cycle path can be treated as different forms of exercise when planning the day, while the museum and buildings provide the cultural focus.

A local fishing association is responsible for fisheries management, supervision and the organisation of angling in the waters of the municipalities mentioned.

The nature area therefore also offers various activities side by side: the pine forests combine walks with mushroom picking, the floodplain forests offer opportunities to observe deer and wild boar, and the cycle path follows the Morava over a longer distance. Angling is a separate offering organised by the local fishing association.

Events

The annual Sekulský jarmok remeselníkov is a crafts fair with live music, dance performances and demonstrations of craft skills; it also offers regional specialities and refreshments.
