Holiday apartment in Moravský Svätý Ján – Culture and nature on the Morava

Moravský Svätý Ján leads from the history of the Hutterites through buildings in the Baroque, Neoclassical and Art Nouveau styles to the Morava, with its oxbow lake and riverside vegetation. The village is also the endpoint of EuroVelo 13 in Slovakia and of the Náučný chodník Nivou Moravy Devín–Moravský Svätý Ján educational trail.

Culture

According to written records, the arrival of the Hutterites from Moravia in Moravský Svätý Ján dates back to the years 1540 to 1550. Their history is connected with Habánsky dvor. The courtyard is square in shape, with three entrances and a small chapel in the middle. The years 1839 and 1994 are displayed on the front of the chapel tower. Every year in September, the traditional Habán-Hody festival takes place on the grounds of Habánsky dvor.

Another religious building is located in the Salaš district: the Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows is an octagonal building. In the village centre stands the Roman Catholic Neoclassical Church of St John the Baptist. It was built between 1840 and 1851 on the site of an older Baroque church.

The Kaštieľ in Moravský Svätý Ján is also part of the historic building stock. It was originally a Baroque building from the mid-18th century. The present building has three storeys and a rectangular layout; its façade is designed in the Art Nouveau style. The cultural offering is complemented by KC JÁNY, a cultural and community centre located beneath the cultural centre. It houses a library, a gallery and rooms for community activities.

Nature

The Čeker–Čertová studňa National Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of Moravský Svätý Ján. It protects natural communities of an oxbow of the Morava as well as riverside vegetation. The Morava also accompanies the EuroVelo 13 section to Moravský Svätý Ján, with close contact with the local flora and fauna. The river is considered a paradise for waterfowl.

Geographical setting

A permanent bridge over the Morava connects Moravský Svätý Ján with Hohenau. In 2005, it replaced a pontoon bridge that had stood there since 1994. This connection is a distinctive part of the local history and the geographical setting of the village.

The Slovak section of EuroVelo 13 is 90 kilometres long. It begins in Bratislava at the Austrian border, runs along the border with the Czech Republic and ends in Moravský Svätý Ján. The section to Moravský Svätý Ján has practically no climbs. It follows asphalt roads of varying quality, mostly with little or no car traffic.

The Náučný chodník Nivou Moravy Devín–Moravský Svätý Ján is a self-guided, linear cycling educational trail that can be followed in both directions year-round. Its focus is on natural history, cultural history and nature conservation; it ends in Moravský Svätý Ján.
