Holiday apartment in Kvašov: Ostrá Hora, nature and history

Kvašov is located in the northern part of the White Carpathians. In the lower-lying part of Kvašov, Ostrá Hora rises to 492 m above sea level. The Kvašov stream flows through the village and is also known as Suchlica. The stream is 8.4 km long, a right-bank tributary of the Lednica, and a Class IV watercourse. Its source is in the White Carpathians, in the Vršatecké bradlá subregion.

Nature

The flora around Kvašov is notable for its remarkable diversity. A total of 189 species of higher plants have been recorded in the village. Four of them – Convallaria majalis, Melittis melissophyllum, Ranunculus auricomus agg. and Scrophularia umbrosa – are classified as rare or endangered. The flower-rich meadows in the surrounding area feature a diverse mix of meadow, fringe and woodland plants. They are also home to species that prefer dry, warm or damp conditions. The invertebrate fauna is diverse as well; the meadows are among the important European sites for several endangered butterfly species.

A shelter with a fire pit and benches stands on the summit of Ostrá Hora. The hills around the mountain are also part of a green-marked hiking trail that leads from Lednické Rovne over the hills around Ostrá Hora to Lednica.

History

The history of the village stretches far back. People were already living in the area of Kvašov during the Neolithic period, that is, between 3,000 and 4,000 years BC, at the Starice and Hôrka archaeological sites. The hillfort on Ostrá Hora was inhabited as early as the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age. Archaeological finds include stone and bronze objects, a bone awl, and a small clay figurine. A Slavic settlement existed below Ostrá Hora near Majer in the 8th and 9th centuries.

Culture

At the centre of Kvašov stands the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of Mary, built in 1973. A cross with Jesus Christ stands in front of the chapel. Regular events in the village include local church-fair celebrations for the Feast of the Seven Sorrows of Mary.

Another local feature is an inn where visitors can get refreshments. The building was constructed entirely from adobe bricks and was formerly a school dating from the First Republic. Its walls are up to 1 metre thick.

Cycling and hiking

A recommended and well-used cycle route passes through Kvašov, providing a connection to the marked Váh Cycle Route 002, which runs through Horovce. Cyclists also use the Horovce–Kvašov–Lednica–Dolná Breznica–Lednické Rovne circular route.
