Beluša lies in the northern part of the Ilava Basin, at the transition to the White Carpathians, Javorníky and Strážov Mountains. In this landscape, remarkable ecclesiastical buildings, local history and paths through valleys, forests and rock formations combine to create a diverse picture of the town.

Culture and history

Among the oldest testimonies is the Chapel of Saint Fabian and Saint Sebastian. It is a national cultural monument and one of the oldest preserved buildings in Slovakia. The Chapel of Saint Anne in Beluša also dates back a long way; it was built in the second half of the 13th century.

The Parish Church of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary combines an older building history with a distinctive Baroque interior, designed in the 18th century. The main altar features a painting by Jozef Božetech Klemens. It was created in 1879 as a replacement for an earlier painting and continues to dominate the altar today.

The renovated Izba ľudových tradícií is located on the first floor of the Beluša Cultural Centre on Farská Street. Since 28 June 2015, it has been open to the public by prior appointment. The Beluša Basket-Making School also points to a distinctive local tradition: As the first school of its kind in Slovakia, it took part in the 1900 World's Fair in Paris.

The local history also includes the Jewish cemetery with 92 burial sites and the Hradište archaeological site. It is considered the most valuable evidence of settlement in the municipal territory of Beluša. Studnička pod Lomom has a spiritual connection, with a stone Lourdes grotto and statues of the Virgin Mary and Bernadette Soubirous.

Landscape and nature

Rohatá skala is a tourist attraction in the Strážov Mountains. From the summit, views open to the northwest and west towards the Javorníky and the White Carpathians. Another distinctive landform is Belušské vráta, a short rocky gorge that the Slatinský stream has cut into the limestone bedrock of the so-called Manín Overthrust Complex.

Belušské vráta can be reached via an asphalt road leading from Belušské Slatiny towards the municipality of Mojtín. In Belušské Slatiny, thermal water emerges from a spring in front of the statue group at the grotto.

Hiking and regional destinations

Belusske Slatiny offers opportunities for recreation, hiking and cycling throughout the year. The Cesta básnikov hiking trail runs through the picturesque Slatinská dolina and the surrounding forests. The project was initiated by OZ Art Belušské Slatiny and has been enhancing the area since 2022 with interesting rest stops, mostly benches featuring references to personalities connected with the area.

The rock sanctuary on Butkov Mountain offers spiritual activities throughout the year, as well as hiking opportunities on well-maintained terrain. In the wider regional area, Ostrá Malenica can be reached via a green-marked hiking trail from the municipalities of Slopná or Mojtín. The 46-metre-long Mojtínska Cave, with a life-size statue of Saint Joseph, is also located in the wider regional area.

The annual cycle and local life

A fixed date in the local calendar is the Belušský jarmok. The local fair takes place on the last Sunday in June.
