Cultural history, traditional ways of life and protected landscapes shape the specific visitor attractions around Miawa. Culture and history

The main exhibition of the SNM – Museum of the Slovak National Councils in Myjava covers almost 170 years of Slovak history. It also focuses on the Slovak people's struggles for recognition of their autonomy, self-determination, sovereignty and own statehood. The museum complex includes the house of Anna Koléniová, where the first Slovak National Council met in 1848. Another notable building is the Myjavská veža: the 67-metre-high tower belongs to Myjava's Tolerance Church, built in 1785.

Every year in June, Myjava hosts the three-day International MYJAVA Folklore Festival. Alongside the historical exhibitions, this adds a recurring event with a focus on folklore to the annual calendar.

Traditions

The Gazdovský dvor in Turá Lúka is a permanent exhibition of a typical Kopaničiar homestead from the late 19th century. It presents traditional ways of living and housing in the Myjava region. Visitors can tour the Gazdovský dvor with a guide and learn about everyday objects, crafts, the work cycle of the Kopaničiaren people and folk costumes.

The Deň sliviek is also held regularly at the Gazdovský dvor in September. The programme includes, among other things, a tasting of spirits, the traditional cooking of plum jam and the preparation of plum dumplings.

Nature and trails

The landscape is also associated with specific forms of protection and trail routes. The Myjava River was declared a natural monument in 1996; the protected area also includes the cadastral territory of Myjava. The protected landscape areas CHKO Biele Karpaty and CHKO Malé Karpaty extend into the Myjava area.

Those who want to combine historical information with a route through Myjava can follow the Historical Walking Tour, established in 2014. As part of this tour, eight information boards were installed featuring dozens of historical photographs, accompanying texts and overview maps. Another designated route is the red-marked, 19.1-kilometre-long E8 hiking section no. 0701h. It leads from the central orientation point in Myjava via the Museum of the Slovak National Councils to Veľká Javorina and Holubyho chata.

For cycling, the blue 4Cykloregio cycling route is designated with the SPORT difficulty level. It runs through Brezová pod Bradlom, Košariská, Priepasné, Polianka, Myjava–Turá Lúka, Vrbovce and Chvojnica, and is 42.9 kilometres long in the region.

Getting there

Myjava railway station is approximately a 15-minute walk from the Museum of the Slovak National Councils. Myjava is also connected by rail to Nové Mesto nad Váhom. The SAD bus stop in the centre of Myjava is approximately a five-minute walk from the Museum of the Slovak National Councils.
