Holiday apartment in Ždiar – Folk Architecture, Nature and Ski Cross
Ždiar is one of only ten Slovak folk architecture reserves. The folk architecture reserve in Ždiar comprises 236 listed buildings arranged in four groups of vernacular structures. This means that the village focuses not on individual buildings, but on a clearly structured ensemble of traditional architecture.
Culture
The Goralské folklórne slávnosti folk festival takes place annually in Ždiar. The village’s traditional costumes also preserve a distinctive regional character: they feature plant and animal motifs from the Belianske Tatry and the area around Ždiar. At the Ždiarsky dom, visitors can experience a staged Ždiar wedding. There is also a permanent exhibition of residential interiors, costumes and work equipment. A visit therefore brings together various aspects of local everyday life and customs, from architecture and clothing to domestic and working environments.
The four groups give the protected heritage a clear internal structure. For the cultural classification of Ždiar, it is therefore not only the number of objects that matters, but also their grouping into vernacular building complexes. The Ždiarsky dom complements this built environment with insights into residential interiors, costumes and work equipment; the staged wedding adds a distinctive feature of its own. The annual festival and the motifs of the Belianske Tatry expand this presentation to include customs and regional design.
Nature
Ždiar is a starting point for excursions into the Belianske Tatry. The Monkova dolina educational trail begins in Ždiar and runs for 6 km to Kopské sedlo. Monkova dolina was formed by glacial activity; remnants of lateral moraines have been preserved on its slopes. Monkova dolina also contains a 140 m-high rock step with cascades of waterfalls. The route of the educational trail, the glacially shaped slopes and the waterfall cascades all belong to the same landscape area.
The landscape of Monkova dolina therefore combines a named route with distinctly different geological features. The stretch between Ždiar and Kopské sedlo is spatially characterized by glacial activity, the preserved lateral moraines and the 140 m-high rock step with its waterfall cascades. The trail, valley form, moraine remnants and watercourses can thus be understood as interconnected components of this landscape area.
Winter
Ski Centre Strachan in Ždiar offers Ski Cross. The Ski-Cross piste features jumps, rollers and banked turns over 550 m. The Ždiar–Strednica ski area has six ski lifts and a 550 m-long four-person chairlift. The facilities also include 4 km of groomed cross-country ski trails. The village therefore offers both a specially designed Ski-Cross piste and lift and cross-country skiing facilities.
The winter sports information thus covers several clearly defined types of facility. The 550 m-long Ski-Cross piste is described as having jumps, rollers and banked turns, while the Ždiar–Strednica ski area additionally lists six ski lifts, a 550 m-long four-person chairlift and 4 km of groomed cross-country ski trails. Ski Cross, lift operations and cross-country skiing therefore stand alongside one another as distinct components of the winter sports offering.
