Holiday apartment in Volkovce: Church, Theatre and Folk Culture
Volkovce stands out through two clearly defined aspects: its precisely characterised landscape setting and a cultural history reflected in church architecture, amateur theatre, folklore and historical festivals. The focus is therefore not only on individual sights, but also on local traditions and the names associated with them.
Landscape
Volkovce lies in the hilly region of the Danubian Lowland, part of which is formed here by the Hronské pahorkatina hills. The municipality is situated on the southern slopes of the Pohronský Inovec and in the valley of the Bočovka stream. The location is therefore defined both by the broader landscape area and by the hills, the mountain fringe and the stream valley. Together, these three elements form part of the geographical description of Volkovce.
Culture
The Church of Saint James the Elder is the oldest surviving building in Volkovce. Its presbytery dates from the 14th century. The church was originally built in the Gothic style; Baroque elements were added between 1750 and 1754. Several historical layers can therefore be distinguished in this building, from the medieval presbytery and the original Gothic structure to the later-added Baroque forms.
Theatre and Folklore
The beginnings of amateur theatre in Volkovce date back to 1927. Local theatre events also include two amateur performances staged exclusively by children. The theatre tradition thus encompasses both the early beginnings of amateur theatre and performances featuring young actors.
The folklore group Volkovčanka is also part of the cultural heritage. Its repertoire consisted mainly of local folk songs, but also included songs from the surrounding area. Its performances included short scenes, such as demonstrations of traditional crafts and ancestral customs. Music, performance and traditional forms of craftsmanship and customs thus came together in a shared stage programme.
Hiking and Routes
The Turisticko Rekreačný Klub Volkoviec a Závady organises hiking events for members and non-members. The events are therefore not open exclusively to a closed circle of club members. A specific road reference adds to the geographical context: a 0.477-kilometre section of road I/65 runs between Volkovce-Olichov-západ and Volkovce-Olichov-východ.
History
After a 16-year break, rehearsals for a theatre play began again in Volkovce. It was performed in 2000 during the church consecration festival held to mark the 725th anniversary of the municipality’s first written mention. On the feast day of Saint James, the church’s patron saint, Volkovce also held a church consecration festival with a gathering of former residents.
