Holiday apartment in Skýcov: nature trail, nature and history

Skýcov combines a summer nature trail with striking traces of nature and history. At its heart is the self-guided summer circular hiking trail “Náučný chodník – Vápenný vrch”. It begins at the lime kilns site, the “areál vápenných pecí”, 1.5 km from Skýcov on the main road to Bošany. From there, the nature trail continues as the Partisan Nature Trail, which leads 13 km onward to Zlatno.

Nature

The trail leads through the Vápenný vrch protected area. Numerous artillery-shell craters dating from the Second World War can be found there; there are also tunnels created by limestone mining. A rare orchid species grows in an area of approximately 200 m² within a strictly protected section.

The nature trail includes a lookout tower at an altitude of 536 m. From this lookout tower, views extend within a radius of 100 km. Thus, the route of the nature trail closely combines natural surroundings, historical traces and a prominent viewpoint.

Culture

The lime kilns site, the “areál vápenných pecí”, on the “Náučný chodník – Vápenný vrch” nature trail is a technical monument of Skýcov. The village is also home to the church “Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie”. It was built in 1809 in the Empire style and is a single-nave building with a straight-ended presbytery and an integrated tower. Its interior furnishings date from the beginning of the 20th century.

The Skýcov Hody on 15 August are associated with this church: they form part of the church feast of the “Kostol Nanebovzatia Panny Márie” church. During the traditional Skýcov Hody, children, young people and older people went to the church in local traditional dress. The food served included eggs cooked with onion skins, as well as Klobassa and ham.

History

Memorial gatherings take place in Skýcov every year on 15 and 16 March. They commemorate the victims of the Second World War and the tragedy of the burned-down village. When Skýcov was destroyed in 1945, 262 houses burned down. Only the church, the rectory, the school and several houses in which Germans were accommodated survived.

The tourist march “NÁUČNÝM PARTIZÁNSKYM CHODNÍKOM” also refers to this historical context. Its 38th edition was announced for 22 August 2026 on the Zlatno–Skýcov route. The aim of the tourist march from Zlatno to Skýcov is to acquaint participants with the history of the resistance in the region beneath the Tribeč Mountains.
