Velčice between the Tribeč Mountains and Žitavská pahorkatina

Velčice lies in the valley of the Čerešňový potok at the junction between the Tribeč Mountains and Žitavská pahorkatina. Its location combines a protected natural landscape with notable evidence of history, craftsmanship, and regional routes. Nature

A large part of Velčice’s cadastral area lies within the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area, where the second level of nature protection applies. The natural landscape around Velčice is home to eight protected plant species and more than 20 protected animal species.

Velčické cery at the Pod cerami site is a protected natural monument comprising a group of old, powerful sessile oaks. Above Velčice there is also a reservoir and a fallow deer enclosure.

Culture and History

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Velčice was probably built at the end of the 13th century; its frescoes are dated to the second half of the 15th century. The Church of the Holy Trinity and numerous monuments located inside it were entered in the state register of immovable cultural monuments in 1965 and 1968.

On Veľký Tribeč, the hillfort features monumental fortification ramparts and the remains of entrance gates. The settlement of this hillfort is dated approximately to the 9th to 8th centuries BC. As an archaeological hillfort, it lies within the cadastral areas of Velčice and Kovarce. The remains of the fortifications and the approximate dating of the settlement thus refer to two different aspects of the same archaeological site.

Below Svinec, the Chapel of the Holy Cross and the Seven Sorrows of Mary was built between 1740 and 1743. The chapel contains a polychrome statue of Our Lady of Sorrows. It also has a reliquary of the Holy Cross brought from Rome in 1748.

The history of Huta above Velčice is also part of the local cultural heritage. A glassworks was founded there in the 1830s and mainly produced hollow glass, including bottles, glasses, and measuring vessels in various colors. These products illustrate the range of glass production at the time.
