Červený Hrádok: Holiday apartment among vineyards and culture

Červený Hrádok is situated in hilly terrain near the valley of the Širočina stream. As part of Upper Požitavie, the village lies in one of the northernmost foothills of the Danubian Lowland. Among vineyards, historical traces and paths through the surrounding area, it reveals a place with many closely interconnected facets.

Culture

The Church of St. George is the focal point of the village. It is a single-nave Neoclassical building with a tower integrated into the structure. At the time of its construction, it received Secession-style furnishings; the church also contains two folk pilgrimage crosses from the second half of the 19th century. A statue of the Most Holy Trinity stands in the centre of Červený Hrádok. Unusual gravestones depicting saints can be found in the cemetery.

Smaller religious monuments also form part of the village’s appearance. A chapel dedicated to St. Urban stands among the vineyards. Červený Hrádok also has a masonry wayside shrine with a wooden sculpture of St. Vendelin from the second half of the 19th century. The wayside statue of the tormented Christ is a folk work from the Classicist period and is dated to 1835. A church fair is usually held in Červený Hrádok on the feast day of St. George.

History

In the Kopanice area, archaeological finds include ceramic material and a chipped-stone industry. In 1970, an archaeological investigation was conducted there into a settlement of the Funnel Beaker culture. Another historical trace leads back to 1599: during the Turkish raid, the inhabitants hid in underground passages known as lochy. These passages connected houses and streets.

Wine and Village Life

Červený Hrádok is characterised by distinctive small wine-cellar houses. Vineyards are documented for the years 1715 and 1720, making them part of the village’s recorded history, along with its former brewing tradition: in 1714, there was a brewery in Červený Hrádok. The village is also part of the educational trail along the Wine Route of the microregion. At various cultural and commemorative events, the inhabitants of Červený Hrádok wear traditional costumes.

Nature

The Mlyňany Arboretum, founded in 1892, lies in the vicinity of Červený Hrádok. Its park now covers 67 hectares and is open year-round. Thus, alongside the local cultural monuments, the surrounding area also offers a larger park landscape.

Getting Around

The Požitavie–Širočina cycling route runs through the cadastral area of Červený Hrádok. The village also has a Fit Park. Together with the educational trail along the Wine Route, active and thematic routes are therefore also among the explicitly mentioned attractions of the village.
