Discover Lovce: Holiday Apartment, European Bison and Observation Tower

Lovce lies in the northern part of the Žitavská pahorkatina, in the valley of the Bolkov stream and on the southern slopes of the Tribečské vrchy. The protected area of Zubria Obora extends into the cadastral territory of the village.

Nature

This natural area is particularly tangible at the Zubria zvernica European bison reserve. It was established in 1958 as the only European bison breeding facility in Slovakia. The breeding area covers 27 hectares, while the protected zone covers 113 hectares. In this protected zone, visitors can often observe wildlife as well as several protected animal and plant species alongside the European bison.

Zubria zvernica is located approximately 3 km beyond Lovce. There is a small car park in front of the entrance gate; from there, an approximately 300-metre-long, easy-to-walk path leads directly to the breeding facility. The cadastral territory of Lovce also contains a carp fishing pond managed by MO SRZ Zlaté Moravce.

Experiences

Above Lovce, the 440-metre-high quartzite hill Plieška is home to the two-storey metal Pliešky Observation Tower, built in 2015. It stands on the rocky ridge of the hill between Lovce and Žikava and has two viewing platforms.

The Lazárova spring is also one of the destinations mentioned in the surrounding area. The spring in Vlčí kút serves as a resting place for locals and visitors and can be reached via a turn-off from the road to Zubria zvernica.

Culture

The Christ the King Church in the village landscape recalls several construction phases: originally, it was a Neoclassical building erected in 1780; it was extended in the 20th century. Lovce also has three wayside chapels. A local mason built them in the second half of the 19th century.

The Cerianka folklore group was founded on 18 January 2011. At performances at home and abroad, it presents Slovak folklore through customs, traditional costumes and songs. Another local tradition is the Lovecká vareška goulash cooking competition, held annually on Lovce Municipal Day.

Getting around

For cyclists, Route 5118 connects several destinations in the surrounding area: it leads from Zubria zvernica onwards to Lovce and then to Zlaté Moravce, where it ends in the city centre. The sequence of natural area, village and city centre is thus explicitly incorporated into the route's layout.
