Holiday Apartment in Jedľové Kostoľany: Mountains, Nature and Culture

The 552-metre-high Drienová Mountain offers views of Inovec, Hrušov, Žibrica and Zobor. This is where the distinctive landscape of Jedľové Kostoľany begins with a clear natural experience: the municipality lies as a foothill community on the southern slope of the Tríbeč Mountains and on the northern slopes of the Pohronský Inovec in the upper reaches of the Žitava River.

Nature

Between Drienová and Razdiel lies the deep Hlboká ravine valley. In the surroundings of Jedľové Kostoľany, the vegetation is characterised by warmth-loving Pannonian flora and gradually transitions into the vegetation of the higher-lying areas of Tríbeč and Pohronský Inovec. The wildlife around the waterways and ponds is also part of this landscape: mallards, swans, herons, and white and black storks can be found there.

Near the Rybníky forester’s lodge are three ponds with a total area of 96 ares. In the areas of Tríbeč and Pohronský Inovec, 30 fully or partially protected plant species also grow. An unusual geological feature is the Horné Lúčno Cave. The old shaft cave lies at an elevation of 560 metres and was formed by the collapse of the roof of a karstified fissure. It is located about 100 metres above the Horné Lúčno settlement at the foot of Skalka; it is 16 metres deep and 40 metres long.

Hiking

Marked trails with different routes pass through the municipality. A green-marked hiking trail leads from the Dedina locality in the municipality via Veľká Lehota and the hut below Vojšín to Nová Baňa. The red-marked Ponitrianska magistrála runs along the ridge of Tríbeč, passes Hrušov, goes through Kostoľany and continues via Veľké Pole to Vtáčnik.

Culture

Local culture includes two singing ensembles that also have original Kostoľany songs in their repertoire, helping to preserve them for future generations. A distinctive regional touch is provided by the local cashmere “deväťpukový” folk costume. Its fabric bears the print of a rose surrounded by nine unopened rosebuds.

On a hill above Jedľové Kostoľany stands the Classicist Roman Catholic Church of All Saints, dating from 1332. The Church of All Saints is a Classicist church built in 1796–1797. Inside are a late Baroque altarpiece of All Saints from the 1790s and a Classicist stone baptismal font from the late 18th century, with wood carvings on its side panels.

A nearby historical site is the ruin of Živánska veža, located about 1.5 km east of Jedľové Kostoľany above a state road that runs through the municipality’s cadastral area. Its construction is dated to the last quarter of the 13th century and may be connected with the establishment of the nearby Hrušov Castle, whose construction was initiated by the Čákovci family.
