Holiday apartment in Topoltschan: Culture and cycling along the Nitra

Topoľčany combines a distinctive urban history with contemporary culture and paths along the Nitra. In the centre of Topoľčany’s prominent quadrilateral square stands the late Baroque Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, built at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Another historic square is Námestie M. R. Štefánika. The Secessionist town hall of Topoľčany adorns one side of the square.

Culture

Stummerova ulica, with the grounds of the old hospital, was designated a heritage conservation zone in 2020. The historic layout as well as architectural and artistic craft details have largely been preserved there. The Tribečské múzeum v Topoľčanoch is housed in a former imperial-royal district court building from the late 19th century, which was declared a national cultural monument in 2014. The museum specialises in documenting the history of hop growing, malting and brewing in Slovakia and presents more than 90,200 collection objects from the natural and social sciences to the public.

Since 28 October 2010, the permanent exhibition “Z dejín židovskej komunity v Topoľčanoch” has been located in the Jewish cemetery in Topoľčany. It comprises 15 thematic sections. The Meštianska vila offers another approach to culture; this Secessionist architectural landmark in Topoľčany can be viewed from the outside. Next to the town hall, the Galéria mesta Topoľčany organises exhibitions, concerts, vernissages and lectures.

Nástupište 1-12 is unusual: in the underpass beneath Topoľčany’s bus station there is a 300-metre-long, fully functional multimedia space for contemporary culture. Nástupište 1-12 also provides spaces for artistic projects and artist residencies.

Nature

The area around the town also reveals different sides of Topoľčany. The 6.818-kilometre-long second stage of Topoľčany’s main cycle route runs along the Nitra’s flood protection embankment and forms part of the Ponitrianska cyklomagistrála. Along its entire length, the second stage is separated from motor traffic. The exception is a 410.6-metre section on an access road marked with a pictogram.

In the area around Topoľčany, the grounds of a reservoir invite visitors to go fishing, boating and walking in nature. Topoľčiansky hrad Castle in Podhradie is also nearby. It offers views of Ponitrie as well as reconstructed rooms of the upper castle with an amphitheatre.

At Krytá plaváreň Topoľčany, admission tickets can be purchased at the ticket office during public opening hours; its season runs from September to June.

The events calendar adds its own dates. From 7 June to 29 August 2026, Kultúrne leto na Terase pri fontáne on Námestie M. Štefánika features concerts in the genres of brass band music, rock, pop and jazz. Public ice skating took place at Zimný štadión Topoľčany on 15 March 2026 from 12:00 to 13:30.
