Culture

The written mention of Veľké Ripňany in records from 1156 provides an early historical reference. Since 2006, the RIPFEST music festival has been held annually in Veľké Ripňany. The Slovak folklore ensemble Slovenský folklórny súbor Ripín was founded around 1986 or 1987. In 2021, a public exhibition entitled Mohyly z doby bronzovej vo Veľkých Ripňanoch was prepared at the Veľké Ripňany Community Centre. Written records, music, folklore and public exhibitions thus stand side by side within the village’s cultural spectrum.

History

The sacred buildings complement these cultural references with clearly dated architectural and furnishing features. The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, Kostol Ružencovej Panny Márie, in Behynce was built as a chapel in 1905 and converted into a church in 1998. The Church of St. John of Nepomuk, Kostol sv. Jána Nepomuckého, was originally built as a Baroque church in 1692 and remodelled in the Classicist style in 1853. The main altar of this church dates from 1804. The painting of Saint John of Nepomuk in the Church of St. John of Nepomuk, Kostol sv. Jána Nepomuckého, was created by František Schona and is dated 1804.

Location

Veľké Ripňany is a stop on the railway line between Radošina and Zbehy. Another local connection to railway history is provided by the Zastávka Community Centre: it is located in Veľké Ripňany in the building of the former railway station. Thus, the village landscape brings together a railway line with two named points of reference and a community venue in a former station building.
