Holiday apartment in Solčany: church, manor house and nature

Solčany combines sacred architectural history with evidence of local everyday life, as well as clearly identifiable links to nature and paths. The Roman Catholic Church of All Saints was built in the Gothic style and is documented in writing for the first time in 1397. Its cruciform layout is part of the building, as are the Baroque stone surrounds of all portals on both the exterior and interior, which have survived to this day. The crypt is not currently accessible; twelve members of the Odescalchi family are buried there. In the centre of Solčany, near the church, stands the monument to those who fell in the First World War. The sandstone group depicts Jesus Christ holding a collapsing wounded soldier in his arms.

History

The history of the manor house is also connected with the Odescalchi family. The family acquired the estate at the beginning of the 19th century and, after 1818, had a representative Neoclassical manor house built there, surrounded by an extensive park. The manor house stands on the main road in the centre of Solčany. It dates from the early 19th century, while its portico in the gable field is decorated with reliefs depicting mythological scenes. At the same time, its current condition includes the fact that the manor house has been abandoned and is falling into disrepair. The park beside the manor house contains numerous rare trees, including a large Amur cork tree.

Traditions

Traditional clothing, crafts and festive culture provide further concrete insights into Solčany. Festive girls' clothing from the village dating from the beginning of the 20th century includes colourful embroidery, lace-trimmed sleeves and two aprons. On feast days, a narrow lower apron called “kuchynka” and a wide upper apron were worn. Women in Solčany also practised bobbin lace-making. The Solčiansky skladaník, a festive cake with a tradition passed down through generations in Solčany and the surrounding municipalities, is part of the culinary tradition. It was brought to wedding guests at the home of the bride's or groom's family on the eve of the wedding and is still baked for important occasions today.

Nature

The Solčiansky háj nature reserve is located nearby, approximately 3 km from Solčany, on the edge of the Tribeč forest complex. It was designated in 1984 and covers 7.07 ha. In the cadastral territory of Solčany, the area protects preserved natural oak forests as well as forest-steppe and rock communities on acidic substrate in the Tribeč Mountains.

Getting around

Solčany lies on a currently signposted Slovak route of the Cyril and Methodius Way. It leads from Nitra via Jelenec and Solčany to Bojná, and continues via Inovecká chata and Skalka pri Trenčíne to Žítková in the Czech Republic. Cycle route 5115 – Sľažany–Zlatno–Solčany also leads into the village: its route comes from a castle below Mišov vrch and Medvedí vrch, then continues along an asphalt road to Solčany.
